Worry and Inflammation

When I began my journey learning about what can contribute to chronic inflammation I was shocked. I had been assuming that my diet played the largest role and up until this point in my journey thought what was happening emotionally, mentally, and socially played little to no effect. Yes, there were nuances and I would get aggravated, overwhelmed, or reactive but I didn't know how that connected to chronic inflammation.


In the book (available now), I explore how all of these areas play a role in our chronic cascade of inflammatory markers that are frequently in circulation.


Research has shown that when we engage and have worry and anxiety there is a depression of our immune system which occurs. We are likely to have higher circulating inflammatory markers. The higher amount of inflammatory markers we have, the more likely we are at having depressed immune systems and impede quality of life outcomes.


I'm not here to say, 'well just ignore your worries and your anxiety that would absolutely be ludicrous. Instead, similar to Buddhist teachings what would it look like to befriend our worries and anxieties? What are they trying to communicate to us about our beliefs and interpretations of the world?


Checking the underlying belief patterns we run off of is a great place to begin the journey towards neutralizing inflammation. It isn't a quick fix, but it is a place where we can increase self-awareness, self-efficacy, and transcendence. These shifts lead to lower inflammatory rates, especially when coupled with behavior/lifestyle changes.
